General Information > Discover Gothenburg

Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden. Gothenburg is a friendly city on the west coast of Sweden, home to a vibrant cultural scene, world-class restaurants, sustainable living, and picturesque archipelago islands.

In autumn Gothenburg changes colours and goes from green to orange. The crisp air and colourful leaves transform the city into an even more enchanting place.

Experiences / Activities

Bar areas

The classic Gothenburg experience is not complete without a trip down “andra långgatan”, the most bar-dense street in Gothenburg. Travel to “Järntorget”, or “Masthuggstorget”, and find the street connecting the two. There are bars all along the street, and many of the side streets. Vasa, an older part of the city, also hosts a lot of bars and restaurants. And of course, you can always find restaurants and bars in the city center.

Museums

Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Gothenburg Museum of Art, both historical and contemporary art, both permanent collections and visiting exhibitions, an iconic building at the top of the parade street “Avenyn”. Well worth a visit even if you don’t enter.

Universeum, the national science center of Sweden, explores various topics in science, from space travel to the rain forest.

Naturhistoriska, museum of natural history (including a stuffed blue whale)

Världskulturmuseet, World Culture Museum

Medicinhistoriska, museum of medical history

Sjöfartsmuseet, the maritime museum and aquarium, recently renovated with tons of maritime history and an assortment of aquatic life

Röhsska, museum of design and craft

Stadsmuseet, the city museum, various exhibitions around the history of Gothenburg

World of volvo, the newly built Volvo (car brand) museum

Maritiman, a museum with marine vessels (including a submarine) which you can enter

Aeroseum, a museum of airplanes

Outdoor activities

Trädgårdsföreningen, a nice park very close to the central station, including Palmhuset, a greenhouse featuring tropical plants. Just a few hundred meters from the central station.

Slottsskogen is a large family-friendly park in the middle of the city, with animals and some cafés. Tram stop Linneplatsen.

Gothenburg Botanical garden and the arboretum. Close to slottskogen, best tram stop: Botaniska.

The archipelago is arguably best in summer, but still worth a visit! Take a tram to “Saltholmen”, and get on one of the ferries. Be warned: if going to the outer islands, this may require more than half a day for a round trip.

Other activities

Swedish fika, preferably in Haga, one of the most picturesque areas in Gothenburg filled with cafés and tourist traps.

Various activities, like bowling, pool, boule, escape rooms, theater, and stage performances are all available and only a Google search away.
